Thinking
Outside the Borders: Library Leadership in a World Community is a pilot project being held in South Africa by the Department
of Library Services, University of Pretoria in partnership with Swets and the Mortenson Center
for International Library Programs.
BACKGROUND: The original project was designed
jointly by the Mortenson
Center for International Library Programs at the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA and the Illinois State Library,
and funded by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services
(IMLS). The project is designed to encourage librarians to think
globally and act locally, with the aim of promoting greater understanding
and appreciation of the world community in which librarians work.
The Institute will focus on leadership issues that affect librarians
regardless of which country they live in.

This Institute will target middle-level library managers in an academic, public/community or
national library service for at least 5 years in South Africa
and neighbouring countries.

Application
forms for the 2008 Leadership Institute will be available
from June 1st and completed forms are due by Monday July 04, 2008.
The Institute will be held from November 5-8, 2006, at the University
of Pretoria.
**Please note**
All Institute expenses will be covered by the Swets grant. Accommodation
will be double occupancy. Selected participants must be able to
travel to attend this Institute at their own cost. Transportation
costs from O R Tambo International Airport to and from the site
will be covered by the University of Pretoria. All participants
are expected to comply with the requirements and adhere to the arrangements
of the Institute.

Eligibility |

Degree in library and information science. |
 |
Current employment in a middle management position
in an academic, public/community or national library service for
at least 5 years. |

Willingness and ability to share what is learned with
others in the profession. |

Demonstrated commitment of participant’s home
institution to supporting sharing activity. |
 |
Excellent communication skills - ability to communicate
well in both the spoken and written media, with a fluent command
of English. |

Willingness and ability to work as a team member. |
 |
Interest in current international library issues. |
