 About Institutional Repositories

More and more institutions in South Africa are starting to implement digital institutional repositories in order to collect, disseminate, manage, preserve, and index the research output created by their communities, as well as other special material after being digitized. For a university, this would include materials such as research journal articles (scholarly publications), before (pre-prints) and after (post-prints) undergoing peer review, and digital versions of theses and dissertations, but it might also include other digital assets generated by and donated to an institution, such as art and other image collections, conference papers and proceedings, etc. Once digital material was accepted by an institutional repository, this repository should be able to guarantee access and preservation of the digital data for years to come.
