Mobile phones are not only handy for communication, such as Skype, games, watching TV , connecting to the internet, etc, it can also be of great academic value. More and more publishers of electronic journals are now making their journals available on smartphones. The popular Apple iPhone seems to be the ideal device to read or download electronic articles.

At present Publishers provide mobile access as follows:

  • as a link on mobile (all web enabled phones, including Blacberry) AND/OR
  • as an app avialable from iTunes (Apple products, sometimes Android (excluding Blacberry and web enabled phones)

American Institute of Physics: AIP iResearch Free download
The iResearch application is compatible with the iPhone and iPod touch devices running software verison 3.0 and higher.

iResearch is an offline e-reader that enables users to save PDF files locally to their device and view them offline without a Wifi or cellular connection. Users navigate through the journals, the volumes and issues to select an article they wish to read.

AIP's iResearch app is free to download from the iTunes Store or from AIP's website. The AIP website has a FAQ section and supplies all information needed by our clients.

Annual Reviews Mobile Free Download

The Annual Review Mobile website provides a personalized browsing, searching, and reading experience optimized for the iPhone, iPod touch, and Android.

To access the Annual Reviews website via a mobile device, use your device’s web browser to open www.annualreviews.org. From there, you will be taken to the mobile formatted site to browse, search, and read Annual Reviews journals.

If you wish to access full-text articles from journals that have been licensed by your institution's library, please download the AR Mobile app and pair your mobile device with the Annual Reviews website.

ASCE Link on Mobile

The ASCE Library site will automatically detect the use of a mobile device, and redirect the user to the mobile edition. All mobile devices with a web browser should be able to access ASCE Library with no difficulty, but full functionality—searching, use of article-bookmarking tools, and other article actions—is limited to the latest mobile web browsers, and requires JavaScript to be turned on.

Why does the EBSCOhost Mobile interface look different from the interface on my PC? The EBSCOhost Mobile interface has been optimized for use on a mobile device with a smaller screen. When this interface is viewed on a normal sized computer screen, the interface will appear stretched with fewer features available than the standard EBSCOhost interface.

IEEE Xplore Mobile Link on Mobile

IEEE Xplore Mobile, which gives users the ability to conveniently perform searches of over two million technical documents with any mobile device connected to the Internet, is officially now available as a completely free service.

  • Refine basic searches by using the "search within results" feature or by using subject filters found at the bottom of the results page.
  • A predictive type-ahead feature, that suggests searches as you type, is available for mobile devices that are JavaScript-enabled.
  • All results you would find on the classic IEEE Xplore for abstracts and citations are displayed ten at a time by relevancy.

JSTOR released a mobile beta site. From any modern smart phone, you can now navigate to http://mobile.jstor.org and search or browse JSTOR. Using this site could save time in discovering relevant articles, which can be downloaded later on a computer. This will be especially helpful in places where a mobile phone is the most efficient method of connecting to the internet.

Functionality on the mobile beta site includes searching JSTOR, browsing by discipline or journal title, saving and emailing citations, and viewing article page thumbnails. Sage Journals Online

SAGE announced that their online journal titles are available in a mobile-optimized format designed for the smaller screen of a smartphone. Readers visiting one of SAGE's journal sites on their iPhone, Android or other smartphone device will automatically be redirected to the mobile version.

The sites feature the essential aspects of the online site, including full-text content of the current issue, archives, and OnlineFirst articles, and offer a simplified search, authentication, and sharing tools, maintaining continuity with the desktop version of the sites.

Mobile Site URLs

The URLs for SAGE's new mobile sites will follow their standard URLs with the addition of "m." after http://. For example, Criminal Justice Review's standard homepage URL is http://0-cjr.sagepub.com.innopac.up.ac.za/, so it's mobile site URL will be http://0-m.cjr.sagepub.com.innopac.up.ac.za/ (You will be prompted for your Student/Staff no and PIN).

For IPhone/iPad, Blackberry and Android

If your institutional library subscribes to ScienceDirect online then you can access exactly the same journals from your smartphone. The screen is smaller but the familiar content is all there. You can look up and read a paper, share the PDF, or just explore what’s out there anytime you get a bright idea.

You will have to provide your own username and password as registered at ScienceDirect.com and your e-mail address. This will be the same username and password as when accessing on ScienceDirect. If you are not registered, only 'guest' features will be available. To access the full spectrum of content, you will need to register online within your library's network. Once you have supplied this information, you will recieve a confirmation e-mail. You must click on the link provided in this email to activate your access to ScienceDirect. You will only have to confirm your email once.
