The Gauteng and Environs Library
Consortium (GAELIC) held its annual workshop on 15 July
2009. The aim of these workshops is to build optimal use
of the Millennium Library System in the GAELIC member
Five staff members of the University of
Pretoria, Department of Library Services attended this
workshop and not only benefited from the presentations
but also contributed by presenting papers. We are very
proud of the first time presenters who braved the podium
with great professionalism.
Marietjie van der Westhuizen and Mart
Muller shared their success story of communicating
effectively with our clients. The courtesy notices that
are sent via e-mail to remind clients that library items
are due shortly as well as the overdue e-mail and SMS
hold notices are greatly valued by our clients.
Lita Ferguson demonstrated the importance
of the quality of the library database and the use of
global updates to achieve this. The audience found her
comparison of serial subscription management with women
amusing and relevant.
Kenny Moremi’s presentation on the
presence of the UP library catalogue on Facebook was
received with great interest.
Anette Lessing’s presentation focused on
the set-up of Millennium web logs and the information
that can be retrieved from these logs. The logs show
inter alia that traffic to the library catalogue is
coming from Opera Mini – a mobile phone browser. She
also demonstrated how to trace and restrict access by
robots (spider and crawlers).
The University of Pretoria was
specifically thanked for its participation in this
