The UP BookJol, or How to eat an elephant while feeding it

 

Die UPBD het ‘n geskiedenis van dinge aan te pak waarvoor ons nie genoeg mense, tyd en geld het nie en dan het ons ook nog die gewoonte, in Hilda se woorde, om die olifant te voer terwyl ons dit probeer opeet. Die Boekjol was geen uitsondering nie. 

At the end of 2006 Nicol Stassen (Protea Books) suggested that we put up an exhibition of academic books as part of the centenary. We decided to rather exhibit e-books and solicited sponsorship from Elsevier for The South African E-book Fair, comprising a one day symposium, an exhibition by well-known publishers of e-books and a virtual exhibition online. And while we had to organise the exhibition anyway we invited South African publishers of paper books and booksellers to join and with the help of local authors, Henning Pieterse, David Medalie and Refilwe Ramagoshi we organised Writers in Dialogue to go with it. E-Pos, an exhibition of a Belgian-South African art and poetry cooperative project complemented it. From there on it just grew bigger and bigger....

 

 

 

 

 

 

The highly successful children’s programme was the brain child of Marieta Snyman who, together with Rudi Venter, represented the Department of Information Science. TUKSbooks, an exceptional exhibition of the books written by UP staff and students the last 100 years was a definite centrepiece.

Lank voor sy terugkeer na die aktiewe politiek is dr Mathews Phosa, wat natuurlik self ook ‘n digter is, gevra om tydens die boekefees op te tree. Die geleentheid is toe uitgebrei na ‘n glansryke openingsaand waar toekennings gemaak is aan verskillende skrywers met ‘n dramaproduksie en waar daar tot laat in die aand gekuier is in en om die groot tent.

On top of this a morning symposium by the Gender Institute, concerts by UPSO and Tuks Camerata, a concert for students with Riku Latti en Radio Lava. All in all a successful happening that was enjoyed by the approximately 4000 people who attended. It was definitely a highlight of the centenary year and one of the biggest contributions to community involvement thus far.  At times we were elated and at times we were despondent but we survived...
