African Hoopoe

Cape Sparrow and House Sparrow

About the book:

Newman's Garden birds of South Africa is designed as a householder's guide to backyard bird-watching. Should the reader wish to progress beyond this stage, the book maybe regarded as a stepping stone to the more ambitious works. Forty seven birds which maybe regarded as common garden species in this country are illustrated and described in this book, together with their maps to indicate their approximate distributions.

If, when the reader has mastered recognition of the birds in his garden, he is prompted to extend his field of activities beyond the garden fence. This book will have served to introduce yet another enthusiast to the fascinating and wonderful world of South African nature, which after all is on our doorsteps.

About the author:

In the late 1960s Mr Newman put aside his advertising career to become a full time bird painter and ornithologist. His paintings now enjoy wide acclaim and he has produced a number of books introducing ornithology to the layman.
